Singer-songwriter Irene Diaz makes nuanced pop songs about love, as viewed through the lens of queer relationships. After some notable releases some years back (for instance, “Crazy Love” in 2013), she had announced in late 2019 that she planned to release her debut album in 2020.

That year, of course, turned out bumpy for a lot of artists. So after teasing a couple more singles, including “Dance” and “Me and My Babe,” and releasing a live EP, Diaz set her sights on 2021. And last week came the news that the album, “Lovers and Friends,” would be out this fall.

Released Friday, her new buoyant single “You,” produced by Alejandro and Damian Jimenez (Carla Morrison), finds its heart in the songwriter’s coming to terms with her own identity. “I hope other queers relate to ‘You,’” she says. “Sometimes finding that boldness in love is hard, to be who you are, or to even explore who you are. You don’t always need a ‘You,’ but it sure is nice to have that support.”
