It sounds like 2020 has roughed up Jane Astronaut.

The Inglewood-based project of Billy Azurdia recently dropped “Bugs,” a reflection on death, drenched in heavy guitar and existentialism.

“‘Bugs’ is a song about loss and all of the feelings that come with that,” Azurdia wrote on Instagram. “We’ve all been through a lot this year, but I’m happy to still be making music and sharing it.”

In a world with live music, Jane Astronaut also encompasses James Kennedy, Phillip Alaniz and Adam De Leon. Azurdia also dabbles in psych, jazz and pop, though his project is ultimately rooted in indie-rock. “Bugs” follows a list of slowly, but steadily released music since September 2018. “Here it Comes” drips in SoCal stoner dreaminess and “Come Back” is an ode to the ’50s slow-jam ballad. The February single finds a sweet spot in its soulful, synthy chorus.

With “Bugs,” Jane Astronaut seals off the year. Azurdia sings, “Maybe when we’re bugs I can see you again with the sun on our heads / Maybe someday we will meet again.”
